Vitamin C Blast Smoothie

If you're like most people, you hate getting sick. I love this time of year because of all the celebrating with friends and family. But, it's a total drag when you're down and out with a cold or bug. I try to be very diligent with hand-washing to rid myself of germs. But the number one best defense for staying healthy? A kick-ass immune system.

I start every day with a smoothie. It's an easy way to get a boost of nutrients first thing. Today's smoothie was all about Vitamin C, which is great for fighting off the cold and flu.  Full recipe after the jump!

Yoga Playlist

I recently created this yoga playlist for a 90 minute vinyasa class. The warm-up lasted about 15ish minutes and then the class moved to a quick, fun and energetic flow. I've been hooked on Little May lately and just love the song "Boardwalks."

Summer Recipe: Beet Salad

Whenever possible, I try to consume only whole foods and use local ingredients. This beet salad recipe is no exception. It is only a few ingredients and you can increase or decrease the amounts to transform it from a side dish to the main meal!

Today's Thought

/ TODAY’S THOUGHT/

IN THE WORDS OF RALPH WALDO EMERSON, “SUCCESS: TO LAUGH OFTEN AND MUCH, TO WIN THE RESPECT OF INTELLIGENT PEOPLE AND THE AFFECTION OF CHILDREN, TO APPRECIATE BEAUTY, TO FIND THE BEST IN OTHERS, TO LEAVE THE WORLD A BIT BETTER, WHETHER BY A HEALTHY CHILD, A GARDEN PATCH, OR A REDEEMED SOCIAL CONDITION, TO KNOW EVEN ONE LIFE HAS BREATHED EASIER BECAUSE YOU HAVE LIVED. THIS IS TO HAVE SUCCEEDED.”

Fresh Orange Juice

What's more refreshing than waking up and enjoying a cold glass of your own orange juice? Few things, if you ask me. I love making my own orange juice versus buying it from the grocery store. Juice from grocery stores tend to be filled with sugar and processed junk that your body doesn't need nor can it digest.

Reminder: Today Is A Gift

"Remember that all we ever have is right now. Forget about the past. Don’t worry about the future. Take each day as it comes, and most of all, stop thinking that the grass is greener, because it never really is."

Our Feel-Good War on Breast Cancer

The New York Times Magazine has an incredible cover story  about the pitfalls of breast cancer, penned by Peggy Orenstein, best-selling author and breast cancer survivor.

The article, "Our Feel-Good War on Breast Cancer" analyzise the pitfalls of the breast cancer industry. Orenstein argues, with good measure, "If screening’s benefits have been overstated, its potential harms are little discussed. According to a survey of randomized clinical trials involving 600,000 women around the world, for every 2,000 women screened annually over 10 years, one life is prolonged but 10 healthy women are given diagnoses of breast cancer and unnecessarily treated, often with therapies that themselves have life-threatening side effects.”

Please do yourself the service of taking 20 minutes out of your day and reading the full piece.

What is one thing that everybody wants more of, and nobody seems to be getting enough? No, not that. But we did cover how to have better sex through yoga last week. Now we are talking about sleep. At the end of the study, researchers found that participants had significantly improved sleep efficiency, total sleep time, total wake time, sleep onset, and wake time after sleep onset.

Stacey Allaire, instructor at Rasamaya yoga studio in Newburyport suggests trying these five poses for better sleep:

Yoga May Benefit People With Irregular Heartbeats

The latest in yoga research has revealed once again the all-encompassing health benefits from practicing yoga. It's crazy to me, that people think yoga is 'just stretching' or a 'whole lotta breathing.' Sometimes you have to smile and nod when people tell me these types of things about yoga.

May You Be Blessed

During savasana, I tend to share a reading that aligns with the theme of the class. At the start of the new year, I shared the following poem with my students. They all have such beautiful practices and my one wish is that they all are be blessed with love, laughter and light throughout the year.

Carpinteria, California

Here is my blessing for them (written so beautifully by Kate Nowak):

Breathing From the Heart

Because yoga has become so mainstream, you can find a class to suit your needs, mood or cravings no matter what the day. Today, I was blessed to take class from a dear friend and fellow yogi: Hillary Collins-Oosting. Tonight was the fourth class in her 'Beginner Yoga' eight-week series.

Create the World You Live In

You create the world you live in. The people you encounter on your path are there not by chance, but because you brought them into your life. The experiences you are having and the situations you are facing are here because you made it so. You are a powerful being with the possibility to manifest anything you like, but most of us do this unconsciously. Depending on what you focus your thoughts and your energy on, your life situation will change - for better or for worse. What does your life look like right now?
